The mission of the .sound gTLD is to establish a distinctive, memorable, and globally accessible namespace for individuals, businesses, organizations, and other lawful users seeking flexible online identities and digital presences.
“Sound” is a familiar English term with several ordinary meanings.
The purpose of .sound is to enable registrants to create distinctive domain names for websites, businesses, products, services, projects, portfolios, communities, marketing initiatives, informational resources, email addresses, and other lawful digital uses.
Intended registrants include individuals, entrepreneurs, businesses of all sizes, nonprofit organizations, creators, associations, and other entities worldwide. Intended users include Internet users who access or interact with services associated with .sound domain names.
.sound will operate as an open, general-purpose gTLD. Registrations will be made available through ICANN-accredited registrars, subject to applicable laws, ICANN requirements, and registry and registrar policies.
To achieve this purpose, the applicant will maintain secure, stable, and resilient registry operations; make registrations broadly available through accredited registrars; promote awareness of .sound as a flexible namespace; support diverse lawful uses without imposing a specialized purpose; and maintain policies addressing DNS abuse, intellectual-property protections, security, registration data, and other applicable Registry Agreement and ICANN Consensus Policy obligations.
The long-term sustainability of .sound will be supported by its broad availability, applicability across many types of lawful online use, distribution through accredited registrars, and ongoing registry operations designed to meet ICANN’s technical, operational, and policy requirements.
