The mission of .QUANTUM is to provide a namespace associated with the applied-for string. The .QUANTUM gTLD is intended to serve a broad range of registrants and users, including individuals, businesses, organizations, communities, projects, and other entities that identify with, relate to, or wish to be associated with the concept represented by the applied-for string.
The purpose of .QUANTUM is to enable registrants to establish online identities using domain names that correspond to this concept. To achieve this purpose, Bird Pepper, LLC will make .QUANTUM available for registration through registrars and other appropriate distribution channels; maintain a secure, stable, and reliable registry infrastructure; implement registration and operational policies that support the availability, security, and integrity of the namespace; and provide ongoing administration of the gTLD to enable registrants to register and use domain names within the namespace.
The purpose of .QUANTUM is sustainable over time because the applied-for string is broadly recognized and has broad applicability across a wide range of contexts. As society, technology, and methods of communication evolve, organizations and individuals will continue to establish online identities associated with the applied-for string.
Link Freedom Group (LFG) aspires to become a best-in-class, vertically integrated domain name registration authority, see linkfreedomgroup.link. This TLD is part of a carefully curated portfolio of strings that LFG intends to pursue in ICANN’s 2026 New gTLD Program. In assembling this portfolio, LFG focused on securing meaningful, memorable, and commercially compelling strings that resonate strongly with end users and offer long-term growth potential.
Over the past four years, LFG (Nova Registry) has successfully grown its flagship TLD, .LINK, from approximately 125,000 to more than 300,000 domains under management. This growth has been driven by innovative distribution strategies, the expansion of registrar partnerships, and a granular pricing model that has enabled .LINK to remain competitively priced while avoiding the significant fee increases implemented by some other registry operators.
LFG’s experience in the domain name industry has reinforced one of the key lessons from the 2012 application round: long-term sustainability is strengthened through portfolio diversification. By spreading operational costs and mitigating revenue fluctuations across multiple TLDs, LFG is better positioned to withstand market volatility and invest in continued growth. Accordingly, LFG believes that even obtaining a subset of the TLDs for which it has applied will establish a diversified portfolio capable of supporting long-term economic stability, operational resilience, and sustainable growth.
1. Mission and purpose: The mission of .quantum is to provide a namespace for quantum science and technology and the many brands that carry the word. Intended registrants include quantum computing, sensing and communications companies; research laboratories, university programs and funded collaborations; media, education and events covering the field; and brands across sectors that use "quantum" in their names. Intended users are the researchers, engineers, businesses and customers engaged with quantum technology and the brands that carry the name. Following delegation, the applicant will, as registry operator of the .quantum TLD, conduct a phased launch, implement all ICANN-required rights protection mechanisms, and distribute the TLD through ICANN-accredited registrars, supported by marketing and outreach to build awareness and adoption among the intended registrant and user groups. The TLD will be operated under a comprehensive DNS abuse prevention and mitigation framework covering the full range of abuse types, combining proactive and reactive controls. Abuse reports will be investigated and actioned in line with applicable policy requirements. The objective is to maintain .quantum as a high-quality, trusted namespace for registrants and end users.
2. Sustainability: Quantum mechanics has been a foundation of physics for a century, and quantum technologies are now the subject of sustained long-term research and industrial investment, with companies, laboratories and national programs forming a growing field. Independently, the word has been established brand vocabulary far beyond science for decades, giving the namespace demand from both a durable scientific field and general commercial naming.
“Quantum” is the standard term for the smallest quantity of a physical property a system can possess and also extends to quantum computing, which harnesses quantum-mechanical phenomena like superposition and entanglement to perform computation. Steelhead LLC ("Steelhead" or the "Registry"), applicant for the “.quantum” gTLD, will serve the global quantum science and technology sector of organizations and individuals engaged in quantum physics research, quantum computing, quantum sensing and metrology, quantum communications and networking, and the education, standards, supply-chain, and commercial activity that supports them by providing a dedicated namespace for these groups.
The quantum community is among the fastest growing technical and commercial communities in the world. Quantum initiatives have been established globally, collectively committing tens of billions of dollars in public and private funding. Quantum science is open, internationally collaborative, and the institutions and businesses built around it are numerous, cross-disciplinary, and geographically dispersed across academia, government, and industry. However, there is no intuitive and unified TLD for these communities to use. The .quantum Registry is built to close that gap. It gives these constituencies a durable, portable digital identity in a namespace to enable research institutions and national programs to establish coherent, verifiable identities; allow hardware and software companies to be discoverable; allow standards bodies, consortia, and educators to build durable and trusted brands; and allow commercial service providers to reach the quantum audience directly.
INTENDED REGISTRANTS AND USERS
Though .quantum will be an open, generic top-level domain, intended registrants include, among others: (i) researchers, engineers, and educators working in quantum science and technology; (ii) universities, national laboratories, research institutes, and quantum research groups; (iii) companies developing quantum hardware, software, sensing, communications, and post-quantum security products; (iv) standards bodies, industry consortia, professional associations, and national quantum initiatives; and (v) service providers whose work materially serves the quantum community, including cryogenics, control electronics, fabrication, and other supply-chain participants, as well as conference organizers, specialist publishers, investors, and workforce-training providers. Users will include these registrants and the customers, partners, and end users who interact with them.
ACTIVITIES TO ACHIEVE THE PURPOSE
The Registry will operate as an open top-level domain with: a Sunrise phase for trademark holders; a Landrush phase; tiered pricing that keeps individual quantum registrations affordable while discouraging misappropriation of strings associated with established institutions; anti-abuse monitoring aligned with the ICANN DNS Abuse Framework; and coordinated outreach to advancement offices and international higher-education networks. Names will be distributed through the ICANN-accredited registrar channel.
SUSTAINABILITY OVER TIME
Sustainability rests on three durable pillars. First, the population of quantum science and technology individuals, institutions, and companies is growing rapidly each year, adding to the addressable base. Second, quantum science and technology individuals, institutions, and companies operate on multi-year planning horizons, supporting strong renewal rates. Third, the Registry is capitalized to operate .quantum for the required contractual term even under conservative demand scenarios. Surplus revenue will be reinvested in abuse mitigation, Universal Acceptance, and community outreach — reinforcing the long-term value of the namespace to the quantum science and technology community it serves.
