CORE Association

CORE Association is applying for the .dpp TLD as a standard gTLD to provide a reliable, secure, and intuitive namespace for digital product passports and other compatible product transparency frameworks.
Product transparency frameworks are structured guidelines and digital systems used to track, verify, and share data regarding a product's origin, chemical makeup, carbon footprint, and lifecycle impact. They can help counter greenwashing by enforcing standardized, verifiable data disclosures across global supply chains.
There is an increasing number of legislative initiatives across different jurisdictions that seek to establish standardized frameworks for product transparency and traceability. The European Union, through the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) is the most advanced framework on this topic and serves as the global benchmark.
Among the requirements set by ESPR, we can find the digital product passports (DPP) concept. This concept is linked with the DNS through two different requirements:
The DPP must be resolvable via the GS1 standard, which must involve a URL, which is domain name agnostic. A specialized TLD will help provide short, canonical, persistent URLs specifically for machine-readable resolution purposes.
The DPP requires online publication of the relevant data set with a tiered access model. Different data subsets must be accessible to the different stakeholders: consumers, providers, administrative authorities, etc.
CORE is applying for the .dpp TLD in order to better serve the URL and online publication requirements of digital public passports, including facilitating compliance to manufacturers globally, via a resource (the .dpp domain name) that they can register and control. Registrants will be manufacturers using their chosen domain name to resolve and publish DPPs in connection with any of their products. Each passport will have its dedicated .dpp Second Level Domain, which can be product names, serial numbers, or any other suitable identifier.
CORE will work closely with DPP service providers and other relevant stakeholders across the value chain, including businesses, regulators, and enforcement authorities to enable a framework where .dpp domain names service both the compliance and the added value service levels.
There are many different digital product passport initiatives beyond the EU regulation. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is working towards developing standards for digital products data exchange. As an example, the ISO/AWI 25534-1 (under development) intends to provide the fundamental principles to ensure DPP global consistency.
The .dpp name space aims to become the go-to solution for all global DPP initiatives.
