The mission of .xxl is to provide a bold namespace for fashion, sizing, large-scale products, entertainment, events and brands emphasizing scale or impact.
The .xxl gTLD is a general-purpose namespace built on a short, memorable and easily typed three-character string. Its ordinary meaning - extra extra large - is a common designation of size or scale that is understood without translation across languages and markets and is used generically across many sectors, without identifying any single industry. The purpose of the gTLD is to provide a broad, widely understood namespace that any business, organisation or individual can use for a website, an email address or an online identity, whether because the ordinary meaning of the string fits their offering or simply because they want a short and distinctive name.
Intended registrants and users: any business, organisation or individual seeking an available, short and memorable domain name, including those that use "XXL" in its ordinary sense of large size, capacity or scale in any sector. This includes small and medium-sized enterprises, start-ups, established companies, online commerce and marketplace operators, service providers, technology and software projects, creative projects, and individuals building personal or professional sites. No sector, profession or activity is favoured or excluded. Registration will be open to any registrant that accepts the registry's published policies. The applying entity will not operate .xxl as a closed or single-entity TLD and will not limit eligibility to itself, any one person or entity, or its affiliates.
Related activities: the applying entity will engage a pre-evaluated Registry Service Provider for registry operations, distribute .xxl through ICANN-accredited registrars under standard registry-registrar agreements, publish and enforce an acceptable use and anti-abuse policy, operate the registry in accordance with the Base Registry Agreement and applicable consensus policies, and conduct launch phases in accordance with the rights protection mechanisms required by the Base Registry Agreement.
Sustainability: the purpose is sustainable because demand for short, available and memorable domain names is durable and not tied to a trend, a brand, an event or the fortunes of any single industry, and because the ordinary meaning of the string is a permanent, non-seasonal concept used generically across languages and sectors. Revenue derives from recurring annual registrations and renewals, which provides a predictable base that grows with registration volume. Registry operating costs are largely fixed under the Registry Service Provider arrangement, so the TLD reaches and holds break-even at modest registration volumes.
