The mission and purpose of the applied-for .rem gTLD are to provide a dedicated namespace for official electronic communications under the European REM standard. REM stands for “Registered Electronic Mail,” the European standard for secure, legally binding digital communications and the evolution of the Italian PEC system (Posta Elettronica Certificata). It provides verifiable proof of delivery, content integrity, and strong authentication of the sender’s identity.
ArubaPEC S.p.A. is a leading PEC operator, and we have observed an increase in the number of companies wishing to use a dedicated domain for their PEC communications. Currently, they must use a third-level domain or a generic domain. As REM will represent the evolution of PEC across Europe, the .rem TLD is intended to enable stakeholders to operate their own “company.rem” domains and “[email protected]” email addresses, rather than relying on shared, third-level, or generic alternatives. This will give providers and users a clear and relevant identity for official communications.
Intended registrants include businesses, professionals, public administrations, and individual citizens, for whom REM email provides an electronic alternative to sending registered mail with return receipt. The TLD is intended to be sustainable because certified electronic communication is an established and regulated requirement across Europe, and the transition to the REM standard is expected to support a stable and continuing base of providers and users over time.

Mission
The mission of the .rem gTLD is to provide a trusted, secure, and recognizable namespace dedicated to remembrance, digital memorialization, legacy preservation, and related commemorative experiences. The .rem string is intended to evoke the concept of remembrance and provide a distinctive digital identity for services and experiences associated with preserving memories, honoring individuals, and maintaining personal and family legacies.
The Registry intends to support innovative digital services that enable individuals, families, organizations, and participating service providers to create meaningful online destinations associated with remembrance, memorialization, and related activities.
The Registry expects domain names to be registered by eligible individuals, organizations, and service providers that satisfy the Registry's published registration policies. Registrations will be made available through ICANN-accredited registrars that elect to participate in the Registry's registration program. Eligibility requirements will be applied in a transparent, objective, and non-discriminatory manner consistent with the Registry Agreement.
The Registry anticipates that domain names may be used in connection with a variety of remembrance and memorial-related offerings, including personalized online experiences, commemorative resources, legacy preservation services, family engagement tools, and future digital products developed over time. The Registry's goal is to establish .rem as a trusted namespace that promotes authenticity, reliability, and long-term accessibility for remembrance and memorial-related digital services while allowing continued innovation as technology and user expectations evolve.
Sustainability
The Registry believes the purpose of the .rem gTLD is sustainable because remembrance, memorialization, and legacy preservation are enduring human activities that exist across generations, cultures, and geographic regions. As digital services become an increasingly important part of how individuals and families preserve memories, honor significant relationships, and commemorate important life events, demand for trusted online remembrance and memorial-related experiences is expected to continue evolving.
By operating the registry as a secure and policy-driven namespace with clearly defined eligibility requirements, while allowing new remembrance and memorial-related products and services to be introduced over time, the Registry will be able to expand its offerings and adapt to changing technologies without altering the underlying mission of the TLD.
