The mission and purpose of the applied-for .pec gTLD are to provide a dedicated namespace for official electronic communications under the Italian PEC standard. “PEC” stands for “Posta Elettronica Certificata,” the Italian standard for secure, legally binding digital communications, providing verifiable proof of delivery, content integrity, and strong authentication of the sender’s identity. ArubaPEC S.p.A. is a leading PEC operator, and we have observed an increase in the number of companies wishing to use a dedicated domain for their PEC communications. Currently, they must use a third-level domain or a generic domain. The .pec TLD is intended to enable stakeholders to operate their own “company.pec” domains and “[email protected]” addresses, rather than relying on shared, third-level, or generic alternatives. This will give providers and users a clear and relevant identity for official communications. Intended registrants include businesses, professionals, and public administrations, for which a PEC email address is mandatory, as well as individual citizens, who may use PEC as an electronic alternative to sending registered mail with return receipt. The TLD is intended to be sustainable because certified electronic communication through PEC is already an established requirement across Italy and is expected to support a stable and continuing base of providers and users over time.
