The purpose of the .lei TLD is (1) to support organizational identity infrastructure by making Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) references instantly resolvable and thus facilitating access to public information about legal entities identified by LEIs; (2) to enable an LEI holder to demonstrate its accountability for, and its ownership of, its web site address(es). The .lei TLD second-level DNS zones are operated by accredited providers acting as trusted third parties between LEI holders and the public at large.
An LEI is a unique 20-character alphanumeric code that enables anyone, anywhere in the world, to access clear, unique identification data about a legal entity. The key definitions for LEIs are set forth in ISO 17442. A given legal entity can have only 1 LEI. The LEI code cannot be selected. An LEI is permanently bound to a specific legel entity registered in a governmental business register or otherwise legally recognized in its legal jurisdiction.
As a matter of policy .lei domain will always be consistent with the underlying LEI. As a result, the holder of .lei domain will necessarily have been clearly identified. The LEI holders have no technical means to use their LEI domains for web sites with custom content and cannot alienate their own LEI nor acquire control of another party's LEI.
