The word “ether” is a common English dictionary word with multiple longstanding meanings across science, history, literature, and ordinary language. It describes the invisible medium formerly believed to fill space and carry light, energy, and signals. For more than a century, it refers to the figurative space through which messages, broadcasts, and ideas are sent “into the ether” to reach audiences beyond their point of origin. .ETHER draws on this established figurative meaning as a name for communication, publishing, broadcasting, and connection across distance. The mission of .ETHER is to give individuals, creators, businesses, and communities a memorable and meaningful home on the Internet from which to publish their work, share their message, and reach an audience. Intended registrants and users include creators and broadcasters, podcasters, publishers, writers, photographers, musicians and artists, journalists and news organizations, educators and researchers, libraries and museums, media and entertainment companies, marketing and communications firms, telecommunications and connectivity providers, event and performance organizations, nonprofits and civic groups, businesses of every size, and individuals seeking a distinctive personal identity online. The registry is intended to reflect the ordinary linguistic meaning of the word rather than the identity, brand, products, or activities of any particular organization. The meaning and intended use of .ETHER are not limited to any single company, technology, product, commercial ecosystem, industry, community, or region. Like the Internet itself, the concept of “ether” evokes a medium through which people communicate, publish information, and connect across distance, making it well suited as an open generic top-level domain. .ETHER will operate as an open generic top-level domain with no restrictive eligibility requirements. Registrations will be offered through ICANN-accredited registrars on fair, transparent, and equitable terms, without preference for any particular industry, technology, commercial sector, organization, or community. In doing so, .ETHER will provide meaningful additional choice in the domain name space. To achieve this purpose, the applying entity has incorporated a dedicated registry operator, secured an experienced ICANN-accredited Registry Service Provider, and completed the technical, financial, and operational planning reflected throughout this application. Following delegation, the registry will conduct Sunrise and other rights-protection processes in accordance with applicable ICANN requirements and consensus policies, build broad distribution through ICANN-accredited registrars worldwide, market the namespace to the registrant communities described above, and operate a secure, stable, and reliable namespace. It will safeguard registrant data, maintain high standards of technical performance and availability, and actively prevent and mitigate DNS abuse. This purpose is sustainable over time because it rests on an enduring need rather than a passing trend. People and organizations will continue to need ways to communicate, publish and be found as those means evolve. The registry is funded to operate through an extended launch period without reliance on early registration volume, is supported by a long-term Registry Service Provider agreement that scales with growth, and is committed under the Registry Agreement to the continued operation, security, and stability of the TLD, including maintenance of the required financial instrument for the benefit of registrants. Above all, .ETHER aims to be a distinctive and lasting place for people and organizations to establish their voice and reach others. It is a name for anyone with something to say and for anyone sending ideas out into the ether.
