The intended users are Internet users seeking authentic Config resources, together with Config's personnel, affiliates, developers, partners and customers. Config anticipates a controlled rollout: initial registrations for technical testing and operational validation; then corporate communications, product and documentation sites and developer resources; and subsequently use by affiliates and authorized partners under Config's registration and use policies. This purpose is sustainable because .CONFIG is operated as long-term brand infrastructure rather than a retail registry: it does not rely on third-party domain sales and is funded from Config's own resources.

Registrants and users will be primarily technical professionals and others charged with setting up or maintaining computers, peripheral equipment and other devices. It will be sustainable because everyone is relying increasingly on configurable devices, and instructions on proper configuration need to be readily identifiable.
